What would it be like?

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to see the world through the eyes of my son, Andrew.

Although Andrew has celebrated twenty-four birthdays, he’s a curious mix of abilities ranging from Kindergarten level right through to his actual age.  I suppose Kindergarten might be pushing it a bit though. Our granddaughter, Maggie, is in SK and she can already read like nobody’s business. She can also do simple arithmetic and even has an idea bout how money works. My true age is …

I’m not sure why, but recently I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my age. Not in a worrisome way, I’m just aware of time marching on — and not only when I look in the mirror!

The calendar tells me that I’m $49.99 + tax. About five years of tax, truth be told. My heart tells me that I’m still about eighteen. My body — energy level / sleep requirements — tell me that I’m somewhere in between, although after a late night or two I feel closer to $79. Continue reading “My true age is …”

The lane I love.

OUR FARM LANE

This is the lane at my first home, a hundred acre farm located just a few miles north of the Toronto Zoo.

I’ve always loved that lane  and some of the trees are really old. In my Dad’s words, “My grandfather, Ben Diller, told me that when he was twenty years old (he was born in 1864) he and his father dug young saplings from the wood lot. ‘Father planted one side of the lane and I planted the other.’ Doing a little math you can see that the trees are 128 years old.”

Although title to our farm was snatched from my own grandfather by the federal government during widespread expropriation for airport lands in the early ’70s, this hundred acres has not only managed to survive, its outlook is bright. Continue reading “The lane I love.”
